The history of the Locher family and their brewing skills begins in the 18th century in Oberegg. In 1886 the family took over the brewery in Appenzell, which is still a brewery and distillery today.
After the ban on producing spirits from grain was lifted, the master brewer Karl Locher, known for his creative range of beers, started to make the Säntis Malt in beer casks seeped in history using spring water from the Alpstein.
Brauerei Locher AG brings the first products onto the market and therefore enters the history books as the pioneer of Swiss whisky production.

Competes for the first time at the most important competition in the world, the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London. All the whiskies entered are prize winners.
Once again all the whiskies entered are awarded prizes by the IWSC. The «Alpstein 2013» special edition is the first whisky from a German-speaking country to win the gold medal. The «Snow White» limited winter edition is launched.
The Säntis Malt «Alpstein VIII» and «Snow White II» editions win awards from the IWSC as «Silver Outstanding» in London for their special quality.
The Säntis Malt «Germany No-2» edition is awarded gold and the «Alpstein X» edition receives a «Silver Outstanding» award in London from the IWSC.
The Säntis Malt editions «Himmelberg», «Alpstein XI» and «Alpstein XII» are awarded silver by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London.
